image_copyAllianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) has come to the aid of the state team who had hit rock bottom and relegated to the FAM Cup for the 2012 season.

The last two seasons saw the Penang team in rapid decline, from the Super League to the Premier League and worse was to come, to the FAM League in the 2012 season.

AUCMS president Datuk Dr Zainuddin Md Wazir said the university, in its desire to see sports in Penang developed to greater heights, has taken a bold step by sponsoring the state football team,

He said the university will offer employment to Penang players, past and present.

"It is our earnest desire to be part of the system to bring back Penang's past glory in football and see the state excel at the highest level.

"It is now the duty of everyone concerned, including the players, to be fully committed.

"We should play to win and that should be our main goal," said Dr Zainuddin after witnessing the signing of the MoU between AUCMS and the FA of Penang at the Waziria Medical Square in Kepala Batas recently.

The MoU was signed by Dr Hamdan Mohd Ali, the AUCMS dean of sports science faculty, and FA of Penang secretary Datuk Mohd Ridzwan Bakar
Hamdan said the university will sponsor a total of RM1.5 million per year and it will be a two-year sponsorship.

The sponsorship will cover training, team attire, salaries, allowances, transport, medical and rehabilitation.

He said AUCMS will manage the team totally, except on things like policy matters.

The Penang team will train at the MPSP mini sports complex in Kepala Batas while the university's buses will be the main mode of transport.

Dr Zainuddin added: "This is a Penang team and not an AUCMS team.

"This is just the beginning and I hope it will not be the last as our goal and aspirations are to be the best in the country."

He said that with the university's vision of being involved in sports, a cycling academy and football academy will be launched soon. The next sport in line will be golf.
