Mahsuri - Tragic tale hits the stage AUCMS presents its first musical show.

THE Langkawi legend of Mahsuri was brought to life in a moving musical theatre performance by students of Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) from Kepala Batas on the mainland.

Up to 102 students were involved as cast and production crew in the performance at the P. Ramlee auditorium on Lintang P. Ramlee in Penang.

The story began when it was time for the beautiful Mahsuri to be married. She tied the knot with Datuk Seri Pahlawan who had bravely defeated other warriors in a contest for Mahsuri’s hand.

The happy couple was gifted with a child but Datuk Seri Pahlawan had to leave her side for a battle..\

When he finally returned, Che Som, wife of Datuk Seri Laksamana, jumped at the chance to accuse Mahsuri of having an affair with another man. She was jealous because her husband was in love with Mahsuri.

Mahsuri denied all allegations but her pleas went unheard. Before she was executed for adultery, she put a curse of seven generations of bad luck on Langkawi.

Dean of the medical faculty Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff said the response was im- pressive for it was the university college’s first musical production, held from June 24 to last Sunday.

He added that the students could use such extracurricular activities as a platform to showcase their hidden talents with the guidance of AUCMS’ six ambassadors, who are local artistes, as their advisors.

“It also helps them to develop their soft skills which are lacking in most graduates,” he told a press conference after the final show.

Production director Harlinda Zakaria said that out of the 13 versions of the story, they chose to base the show on the works of Amelia Hashim.

Director Nur Anissyuhada Samsudin said she advised the actors to use their sad memories to help them in their acting.

“Most of them had never performed on stage before but they delivered performances that were better than expected,” she said.

First-year pharmacy student Haswani Mazenah, 23, who played the cunning character of Che Som, said she sought acting tips from videos on YouTube while checking out other plays on Mahsuri to help her get into the right mood on stage.

“I was told that I had the right look for the character of Che Som,” she said, adding that it was her first time acting in a stage show.
