He said the diploma programmes gave both theoretical and practical exposures to the basics of the field a student had chosen, adding that AUCMS understood the needs of the industry.
"When students graduate with a diploma, they can take this as the first step. The job opportunities are there, but students can also choose to further their studies in their respective fields.
"Diploma is not the end. It should serve as a catalyst for students to go further, to get their degree, masters and even doctorate," Dr Zainuddin said, adding that students should aspire to study to the highest level.
He noted that AUCMS had the infrastructure, human resource as well as academic planning based on market needs, both local and abroad.
Collaborations have been formed with several foreign universities, such as Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), National University of Ireland, Galway and University College Cork, which serve as a foundation for AUCMS to produce allrounded students.
AUCMS provides twinning programmes with USU ((MD-USU), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) (MD-UKM), University College Cork (MD- UCC) as well as the National University of Ireland, Galway (MD- NUIG) and is on course to offer a medical degree programme.
AUCMS is planning to offer the MD-USU degree 100 per cent locally at its new RM15 million campus in Kangar, Perlis.
Students taking the fiveyear programme will be able to undergo their pre-clinical studies in Malaysia instead of spending three- and-ahalf years at USU in Medan, Indonesia.
Dr Zainuddin said the USU senate had evaluated AUCMS' teaching standards and facilities and hopefully in two years, the degree could be done here completely.
"Next year will be the 10th year we are offering the MD-USU programme. It is time to move things here. We are now awaiting approval from MQA, and if all goes well, we may be able to start in September this year in our existing campus in Kepala Batas first," he said, adding that even though it was an Indonesian medical degree, the standard was high and the marketability of MD-USU holders has never been an issue.
On the MD-UKM degree, which AUCMS was offering for the second year, Dr Zainuddin said AUCMS students had been showing very encouraging results, performing as well as their UKM peers.
AUCMS has also big plans for its MD-UKM programme, with a large satellite campus in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah in the pipeline.
The site for the campus has been identified and the premises will host the university-college's laboratory research activities.
"We are also planning to relocate some of our faculties to the new campus, which we hope to start running in September," he said.
AUCMS is also planning to set up four new faculties - Sports Sciences; Medical Business and Management; Medical Hospitality and Tourism; and Traditional and Complementary Medicine - within the year.
In addition, AUCMS also plans to offer degree, masters and doctorate programmes in the future.
