DSC05211Fifty students, including five doctors from Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS), have come forward to provide assistance to the flood victims in Perlis.

Their presence has reduced the burden of approximately 800 victims who are currently gathered at SMK Syed Alwi, Kayang, Kangar, Perlis.

The students are from the School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, and School of Physiotherapy and together they have helped by providing assistance in terms of health screening and food aid.

With the lecturers, who are also medical doctors, they control the checking counter for adults in need of medical help while providing food assistance to 300 victims.

They examined blood pressure and the supply of medicines for those who have fever and suffered minor injuries and donated basic food like rice, cooking oil, sugar, bread, and others.

At the same time, the students, who have been divided into several groups, also entertained the children by holding activities such as colouring contest and dancing.

Senior school teacher, Fitrah Osman said that it has been raining since Monday and flooded several villages nearby and that they have received instructions to make the school as a   temporary home for the flood victims.

“There are nine villages affected namely Kampung Surau, Kampung Behor Mali, Kampung Datuk, Kampung Hutan Ibus, Kampung Seriab , Kampung Batu Hampar, Kampung Bangsal Lebah, and Kampung Titi Serong.

"For now the school has temporarily stopped its usual functions and a committee has been set up among the teachers to monitor and manage the flood victims here,” she said.

She also said that the victims were placed in classrooms and other blocks in the school. She further added that they were waiting for cooking utensils to cook in the school compound and for the moment, the evacuees were provided with food prepared by residents living in areas not affected by the flood

AUCMS Director of Health Services, Dr. Ismail Ahmad suggested that more people should come forward to help out by providing food and medicine.

"AUCMS will continue to provide assistance to victims from the aspects of medical management and community service," he said, to relieve the burden of the flood victims.
